Dear Confirmandi and parents,
We hope you have had a safe and enjoyable summer with your family, and are refreshed and ready to begin another school year. The start of the school year brings with it the beginning of another year of sacramental preparation for Confirmation. The sacrament of Confirmation is a decision to grow deeper, stronger and ever more faithful in your relationship with Jesus. It is a decision that brings you to a point of spiritual maturity as you complete your sacraments of initiation in the Catholic Church.
We invite your family to take a moment to review the information listed below, to help you decide if you would like to receive Confirmation, and are able to wholeheartedly commit to all that it entails.
The requirements for receiving Confirmation at St. Francis de Sales Parish are as follows:
- Be a registered Parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Parish
- Attend Sunday Mass weekly at a Catholic Church (passport program in place for children preparing for their Sacraments) *
- Be in grade 7 or higher
- Register for Confirmation by attending a registration meeting in September, and by submitting a completed registration form at that time (see below for dates/times)
- At the registration meeting, submit a photocopy of your child’s Baptismal certificate** and the $75.00 fee to cover the cost of programme materials
- Participate fully in all catechetical sessions throughout the year
There will be mandatory registration meetings for anyone interested in receiving the sacrament of Confirmation during the 2017-18 sacramental year. You must attend one of these meetings to register for the Confirmation preparation program. If you are unsure if this is the right year for you to receive Confirmation, this meeting should prove useful in helping you with your decision. The meeting will provide you with detailed information regarding the sacramental program, as well as the opportunity to have answered any questions you may have. Please feel free to choose the meeting that best suits your family’s schedule. All meetings will take place in the Church. The dates and times are as follows:
Monday September 18th at 7:00 p.m. or Monday September 25th at 7:00 p.m.
*Once registration is complete, the Confirmandi will receive a “passport” which they are expected to have stamped by one of our Confirmation team members at the end of Mass each weekend throughout this time of preparation. Please have your child get a bulletin stamped if they forget to bring their passport or if you are travelling and are required to attend another Catholic parish. The passports will be collected and reviewed by our team throughout the course of the year. Failing to commit to weekly Sunday Mass, families may be invited to consider postponing Confirmation to another year when there is more opportunity to encounter the Holy Spirit without too many interruptions that hinder their ability to make a clear decision.
**If you have difficulty locating your child’s Baptismal certificate, please contact the Church where your child was baptized to get another copy. Please note, if your child was baptized in the Catholic Church, however your family is currently practicing another faith, this program is not suitable for your child at this time.
If your child is in need of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Communion or being received into the Roman Catholic Church, please indicate this on the registration form. Preparation for these sacraments will be included in the 11 week Confirmation program that all Confirmation candidates will be required to attend. For those requiring baptism or reception into the Church, please come by the parish office to pick up the Baptism preparation package for Confirmation children. This baptism registration package should be submitted on the Confirmation registration date along with the Confirmation registration package.
Lastly, we encourage families to celebrate sacraments at the parish where they regularly worship. If you attend St. Francis de Sales Parish, then this is where your child should be confirmed. If you attend regularly at another Catholic parish, then that is where your child should receive his/her sacrament.
Thank you for your cooperation.
God bless you,
Rev. Joseph Singh
